Time to Check out the PlayStation 3

Even after Microsoft leapt ahead in the video-game wars a year ago with its impressive and powerful XBox360, Sony adamantly insisted that the PlayStation3 would rise above all competition to deliver an unmatched level of fun.

Put simply, Sony has failed. But PS3 Downloads has brought a silver lining to the PS3 Cloud.

Measured in megabytes, gigabytes and other technical jargen, the PS3 is certainly the world’s most powerful game system. It falls short, however, of providing the best overall entertainment experience. This is where downloading you own software comes in. I have spent more than 50 hours playing the PlayStation 3 over the last month or so and may have played more games on the system (around 22) than probably anyone outside of Sony itself. Sony did not activate the PS3’s online service until just before the Friday debut. To bad for Sony, the best way to explain how the PS3 falls short is to tell us how opposite it is from its primary rival, Xbox 360. But now that we have the ability to download media directly to the ps3 it’s more than made up for the shortcomings.. Keep in mind that one of the big S’s selling points has been that the PlayStation3 has the ability to play BluRay HD  movies. But HD cables are sold separately?  If you bring your PS3 controller over a friend’s house, you’ll have to plug it back in there as well. The XBox’s non wired controllers were always included.  Happily enough the PS3 can easily be equipped with a pair of wireless controllers.

If there is one thing you would figure Sony to get right, it would be Tunes. Right, you can plug in an mp3 player and the PS3 will certainly play the songs. But as soon as you try to play a game, the music ends. The PS3’s whole online experience used to feel tacked-on and unpolished. But now with the advent of private sites offering downloads the experience is well worth the price. On the PS3 most games have their own separate friends list and some have no friends at all. For now Sony’s lead designers seem to have won out over the people who study fun.
